Like many hopeful parents, Stacy and Babajide from Lagos, Nigeria, dreamed of giving their beloved daughter a younger brother. What they didn’t expect was the extraordinary surprise that awaited them during a routine ultrasound. Stacy, 31 at the time, was thrilled to learn she was expecting twins. But even that excitement couldn’t have prepared her for what happened on the day of delivery.
When Stacy arrived at the hospital for her scheduled cesarean section, she and her husband were full of joy, eager to meet their twin boys, Daniel and David Omirin. But as soon as they saw their newborn sons, they were stunned.
Born on February 26, 2019, just minutes apart, the boys were instantly special—not because of their shared brown eyes, but because of their completely different appearances. Daniel had deep brown skin and tight black curls, a mirror image of their older daughter Demilade. David, however, arrived with pale skin and golden-blond hair, an unexpected contrast that left everyone speechless.
Stacy recalled that the ultrasound hadn’t revealed anything unusual, so their differing appearances were a complete surprise. The moment David was born, the nurses couldn’t contain their curiosity. More and more hospital staff came in just to witness the remarkable twins for themselves.
Many people find it hard to believe that Daniel and David are biological siblings, let alone twins. Some question if both children are hers, or if Babajide is the father. But Stacy remembers the delivery vividly and especially the nurse’s words when David emerged: “The second baby has golden hair.” She looked down and saw what she could only describe as a miracle.
David was born with a rare genetic condition called oculocutaneous albinism, which results in a lack of melanin in the skin, hair, and eyes. While Stacy felt joy at her sons’ arrival, she also had concerns about David’s health and how society might treat him. Fortunately, David has been healthy and continues to thrive.
Though Nigeria has a significant population of people with albinism—estimated at over two million—misunderstanding and discrimination remain widespread. Thankfully, Stacy and her family have not encountered hostility or prejudice so far.
Babajide’s response to seeing his sons was heartwarming. He affectionately nicknamed David “Mr. Golden” and stood by the hospital bed in awe, calling them the most precious gift he’d ever received.
Despite their stark physical differences, Daniel and David are inseparable. Their personalities also contrast: Daniel is lively and sociable, while David is quieter and more observant. But both boys share a loving and warm nature that charms everyone around them.
Stacy is often stopped in public by people asking, “Which one is yours?” To which she smiles and replies, “They both are.” Though others may be surprised, Stacy herself is still in awe of the moment they were born—a memory she’ll cherish for a lifetime.
