Love flows through the music of André Rieu’s orchestra, not only in the melodies but also in the bonds formed among its members. Just before one of his concerts in Maastricht, two members of the Johann Strauss Orchestra shared a special story. Violinist Frank Steijns and mezzo-soprano Madieke Schoots, who met while working in the orchestra, have now been happily married for two years.
Frank recalled his journey with the orchestra, saying he had been part of it for more than 25 years before Madieke joined. Their paths crossed thanks to the music they both love, and as he put it, “Then magic happened.” Their relationship blossomed within the environment André Rieu helped create, one filled with harmony both on and off stage. Frank believes this union would not have been possible without André’s orchestra bringing them together.
Pierre Rieu, André’s youngest son, also shared a glimpse into his father’s world. He described him as a warm-hearted and caring man, a father who always puts family first. Pierre explained that his father often speaks of having two families—one at home and one in the orchestra—and Pierre feels a part of both.
André Rieu is a father of two sons and grandfather to five grandchildren, who are a constant source of joy in his life. Pierre noted that once the grandchildren were born, he and his brother noticed a shift. “We moved from being the sons to being the fathers of his grandchildren,” he laughed, “but we love it.”
Pierre also spoke about how touched he was by the reception his father received during his first visit to Malta. Although he couldn’t join that trip, he watched the videos sent by André’s team. He was moved by the sight of so many people cheering and welcoming his father with open arms. “It’s not like that everywhere,” Pierre said. “That kind of warmth stays with you.”
Now, Pierre is looking forward to joining André for their upcoming concerts in Malta, eager to experience firsthand the affection that left such a deep impression on his father.
