In addition to his love for music, Mayo has dedicated 19 years to serving as a Richmond police officer, actively engaging with disadvantaged youth.

“I don’t fit the typical officer mold. In my role as a school resource officer, my aim is to guide kids away from trouble and towards a positive path,” Mayo shared.

His commitment to this position is rooted in personal experience, having encountered hardships while growing up in Richmond’s public housing.

“A police officer named Curtis Simmons served as my mentor when I was young and heading down the wrong path. He shielded me, and I owe my life to him,” Mayo disclosed. “During my childhood, I witnessed more violence than I have encountered throughout my entire career as a police officer.”

His spouse, Mechelle, similarly dedicates her professional endeavors to aiding others in her role as the Director of School Counseling at Richmond Public Schools. Together, they strive to positively impact the students they serve.

Music has consistently served as Mayo’s coping mechanism amidst the stresses of his profession. His passion for music originated in his church choir and has since evolved into an integral aspect of his life.
“When facing challenges in life, I find solace in playing the piano. Music is my coping mechanism,” shared Mayo. “It’s an essential part of my existence.”

Mayo gained widespread recognition in 2020 with his viral rendition of Marvin Sapp’s “The Best in Me” on YouTube, showcasing his musical prowess to a larger audience.
