After delivering a stunning rendition of the national anthem at a men’s basketball game, West Virginia University police officer Carlton Smith quickly became an online sensation.

On January 12, while on duty at the WVU Coliseum, university administrators approached Officer Smith with an urgent request. The singer scheduled to perform the national anthem was delayed due to snow, and they needed someone to fill in within just five minutes.

Officer Smith, a four-year veteran of the West Virginia University Police Department, is known for his vocal talent among his colleagues. The 28-year-old officer had previously showcased his singing skills on a national stage, having advanced to the Hollywood round of “American Idol” 13 years ago. Despite his experience, the sudden request to perform in front of 14,000 spectators at the Coliseum took him by surprise.

“They confirmed I was Carlton and said they needed a big favor,” Smith explained. After requesting a glass of water, which a cheerleader promptly provided, he was escorted to the court. “They just told me to start singing when they called my name,” he recounted.

Smith’s performance has since garnered over 2 million views on YouTube. When he’s not working, he continues to pursue his passion for singing. Smith participates in church choirs and performs with a band during open mic nights. “It’s my passion,” he admitted.
