Kamala Harris, who was defeated by Donald Trump in the presidential elections, has finally spoken publicly after months of silence. In a recent address at the Leading Women Defined Summit in California on April 3, Harris opened up about a growing sense of fear she says is sweeping the nation under the current administration’s leadership.
Without naming Trump directly, Harris touched on controversial topics such as the international tariffs imposed by his administration and a number of executive orders that, according to her, appear to undermine legal principles. Her remarks seemed to reflect deep concern over the current state of the country.
She addressed the audience with words meant to inspire and empower. “When one person, when a few stand with the courage, that is the courage exhibited by the leaders in this room every day,” she said. She emphasized the strength it takes to admit fear, to recognize wrongdoing, and to actively seek a better path forward. Harris highlighted the importance of citizens holding onto their democratic rights and responsibilities, saying, “Understanding our power in the democracy that we still have if we hold on to it. Courage is contagious.”
She continued by acknowledging that many recent events had been anticipated and that witnessing them unfold has only amplified public anxiety. “Yes — it creates fear,” she admitted. “Because many of the things we’re seeing… we knew were coming. I’m not here to say, ‘I told you so.’”
Congressman Jamie Raskin later echoed her sentiments during an interview with Jen Psaki on MSNBC. He pointed out that Democratic leaders have faced criticism for not speaking out sooner, but argued that the complexity of the situation takes time to fully grasp. Raskin described current political conditions as a deliberate move toward authoritarianism, including efforts to purge federal employees and weaken democratic institutions. He affirmed that Democrats are now unified and ready to push back, saying, “Now, everyone is in a fighting mood.”
After stepping out of the public eye following her election loss, Harris is once again taking center stage. According to The Grio, she is now considering a run for California governor in 2026.
