The woman in the picture, Judy Sheindlin, rose to fame as a renowned TV host, but her journey has been marked by challenges and triumphs, including a health scare during one of her shows. Best known for her role on Judge Judy, she has had a remarkable career both in and out of the courtroom.
Born on October 12, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish parents Ethel and Murray, Judy’s early life was shaped by her father’s work as a dentist and her mother’s role as an office manager. After graduating from James Madison High School in 1960, she attended American University in Washington, D.C., where she earned her degree in 1963.
Judy’s legal career took a significant turn when she attended American University’s Washington College of Law. Out of 126 students, she was the only woman in her class. She later earned her law degree from New York Law School and passed the New York bar exam in 1965.
She began her professional journey as a corporate attorney but grew dissatisfied with that career. In 1972, Judy became a prosecutor, and her career took off. Her big break came in 1993 when The Los Angeles Times featured her in an article, followed by an appearance on 60 Minutes.
After 25 years on the bench, Judy retired in 1996 and transitioned to television. That year, she debuted Judge Judy, a show that quickly became a sensation due to her sharp and straightforward approach to the law.
In March 2011, Judy suffered a mini-stroke while filming. Initially reluctant to seek medical attention, her coworkers convinced her to go to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a transient ischemic attack (TIA), which caused her double vision and delayed speech.
After an incredible 25 seasons, Judge Judy concluded in 2021. At that time, she was one of the highest-paid TV hosts, earning $47 million per season. At the age of 81, Judy launched a new show, Judy Justice, which is currently in its second season.
Throughout her life, Judy has been married three times. Her current husband, Jerry Sheindlin, is the love of her life. Their first meeting at a pub led to a lasting relationship marked by marriage, divorce, remarriage, and a partnership that has endured for over 30 years.
